The gig economy has become more popular over the past ten years and its flexibility, dynamic and exciting nature drew 26-year old Nurul Farah Shamimi binti Amlee like a moth to a flame.

“It is definitely the fact that I can do it from the comfort of my own home, at my own time, and at my own pace,” says the Electrical and Electronics Engineering graduate. And that’s what pushed her into joining the Digital Entrepreneurship Programme at Mereka.

Prior to joining the programme, Mimi had set personal goals, which she described as realistically low, consisting of merely getting familiar with available freelancing platforms and how to best appeal to potential clients. The programme turned out to be an overall eye-opening experience.

She described the programme to be, “interactive, fun and fulfilling” and was challenged with the mock assignments in the best way possible that were part of the programme. Mimi was pleasantly surprised by the new acquaintances, job opportunities and the learning platform that she gained in addition to upskilling her professional development and expertise.

Mimi believes it impossible to highlight just one favourite moment from the programme. She shared with us her enjoyment from her interactions with the trainers at the webinar sessions and the industrial partners during the mock assignments. The learning and reflection didn’t stop as Mimi remembered vividly how shocked she was left after the Personal Finance Module, where she realised how neglectful she had been towards her personal financial management. Luckily, she’s been quick to remedy since.

Now that Mimi has completed the programme, she has recently secured an online job in audio transcription and hopes to continue honing her talents. With more practice comes more confidence, and hopefully more long-term clients and this current Master of Philosophy student at Universiti Teknology Malaysia is thriving with the hope of what’s to come.

For those who are interested in the programme, Mimi advises to “enjoy the journey, savor every moment you will be spending with the trainers, the Mereka team, and your cohort. Interact! Talk to the trainers, don’t be a stranger. They are there because they want to help you, so don’t be shy or afraid!”
